How we approach it

Demolition, haul-away and subfloor leveling so the new floor sits on a solid base.

This is the part of the job nobody photographs and everybody feels. Whatever goes down next — hardwood, plank, laminate, tile or carpet — sits on the subfloor, and the subfloor decides how flat, how quiet and how long-lived that new floor is going to be.

We take the old floor out, including the adhesive, staples, tack strip and thin-set that most people underestimate, and we haul it away. Then we repair what the demolition exposes: soft spots, water damage, loose sheathing, squeaking joists.

Finally we flatten. Self-leveling compound, patching or grinding, depending on what the surface needs and what is going on top of it. We moisture-test concrete slabs before covering them, because a slab that reads high will destroy a wood or glued floor from underneath and the failure will not show up until months later.

What's included

What you get with this service

Written into the estimate, so there is no debate later about what was and wasn't part of the job.

  • Demolition of existing flooring — carpet, tile, hardwood, laminate or vinyl
  • Adhesive, thin-set, staple and tack strip removal
  • Haul-away and disposal of all debris
  • Subfloor repair — soft spots, water damage, loose or squeaking sheathing
  • Leveling with patching compound, self-leveler or grinding as required
  • Moisture testing on concrete slabs before anything is installed over them

Why Baltazar Floorcovering

What we do differently on floor removal & prep

  • 01

    Moisture tested, not assumed

A slab that reads high will ruin a glued or wood floor from below. We test before we cover it, every time.

  • 02

Debris is our problem, not yours

Demolition, loading and disposal are part of the job. You do not end up with a pile in the driveway.

  • 03

    Flat is a measurement

We check flatness against the tolerance the new material actually specifies, rather than eyeballing it.

Questions

Floor Removal & Prep — the things people ask

How messy is a floor tear-out?

Removing tile and thin-set is the dustiest work in flooring, and we plan for it — plastic containment at the doorways, vacuum-assisted tools and daily cleanup. It will not be invisible, but it does not have to end up in every room of your house.

Do I need leveling, or is my floor fine?

You will know once the old floor is off, and so will we. We measure the subfloor against the flatness tolerance the new material specifies and show you the result rather than adding leveling to the invoice after the fact.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Every project starts with a free, no-obligation estimate. We measure the space, talk through your material options and give you a written price before any work is scheduled.
